Abstract:
Constitutive properties of large-scale granular systems are likely to be unique or ill-defined as the result of history effects, compositional variation, and absence of suitable averaging volumes. In consequence, fundamental physical studies of granular systems at laboratory scale can contribute in only a limited way to quantitative numerical prediction of the behavior of large-scale granular systems.
