My research addresses the population and community level consequences for fish and other upper trophic levels of human-induced alterations of marine systems. Currently, I am investigating the effects of anthropogenic nutrient loading and associated hypoxia on fish communities of nearshore continental shelves (Gulf of Mexico) and coastal estuaries (Neuse River, NC). Through a combination of field observational (trawl/hydrographic surveys and field telemetry) and modeling (individual-based, statistical) approaches I attempt to scale up from individual responses to environmental change to population and community level effects that are needed as a basis for informed policy decisions.
