    Author's Comments:
This is one of three papers I will publish in 2009 that show the importance of steric factors and conformational fluctuations in the control of hemoglobin function.

    Abstract:
Clam Hbs provide useful information of how nitrite can regulate blood pressure. Oxygen was found to play a critical role in "clamming up" the active site of a nitrite-resistant clam Hb.

    Keywords:
hemoglobin • oxidative damage • nitrosative damage
