- Research Interests: Interstate Relations, Democratic Peace, and Methodology
Associate Professor of Political Science. His primary interests are in the sources of international militarized conflict and strategies for international conflict resolution. He is currently involved in research projects which focus on the role of norms in crisis bargaining, the influence of democracy on the use of force, and the use of alliances as instruments of international control. He has also published works on the democratic peace, diversionary wars, deterrence theory, and the influence of the international system on the outbreak of violence. He previously taught at Harvard University and has been a recipient of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship, a fellowship from the Regents of the University of Michigan, and a Horace H. Rackham Dissertation Fellowship. His works have appeared in the American Political Science Review, The Journal of Conflict Resolution and Political Science Quarterly.
