    Highlight:

    Dr. L’Homme received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland in 1975 and his Masters in Education degree from American University in 1977. That same year he began his first teaching assignment as a special education teacher at Crosby Junior High School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

    He later assumed a similar position at the Rose School, a psychoeducation day treatment program in Washington, D.C.   He was committed to teaching the most troubled children to read, write, and do math while supporting their immediate needs for emotional stability, safety, and security.

    In 1982, Dr. L’Homme was appointed the first principal of City Lights School, founded under the auspices of the Children’s Defense Fund, for disturbed and delinquent adolescents in the District of Columbia.  During his tenure at City Lights, he received his doctorate degree from the University of Maryland in 1989.

     In 1994, Dr. L’Homme was appointed principal of New Hope Elementary School in Orange County, North Carolina.  In 1997, the school was named a “Top 25” school by the North Carolina State Board of Education. Subsequently, he was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools and later Associate Superintendent for Instructional Services for Durham Public Schools.  In 2004, he was appointed Superintendent for Franklin County Schools. 

     In 2009, Dr. L’Homme was recruited by Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children’s Defense Fund to be Director of Education Policy and lead coordinator for the Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Campaign.  After two months, he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) responsible for the day-to-day operations of this multi-million dollar premier child advocacy group with offices in Washington, DC and throughout the country.

     In 2010, Dr. L’Homme was appointed Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.  In 2014, Dr. L’Homme returned to Durham, North Carolina accepting the post as Superintendent for the Durham Public Schools. He focused on lowering suspension rates, raising graduation rates, and ensuring that all students read by third grade.
