Research Description: Gary Gereffi's research interests deal with social and environmental certification in global industries, the competitive strategies of global firms, and industrial upgrading in East Asia and Latin America. His three major ongoing research projects are: (1) industrial upgrading in East Asia, North America, and Eastern Europe/Central Asia; (2) a comparative analysis of global restructuring in the apparel, automotive, computer, and retail sectors; and (3) a study of the emergence of public and private governance systems in the Americas. Currently, Gereffi is writing a book on global value chains and industrial upgrading.
