Abstract:
This manuscript examines the frequencies of
substance abuse and mental health
comorbidities in a sample of HIV-positive
individuals receiving care at two Infectious
Diseases clinics in one region of the
Southeast. Of those screened with a
standardized screening instrument, 60% had
symptoms of mental illness, 32% for substance
abuse, and 23% had co-occurring symptoms of
both disorders. These rates are higher than
others found in an HIV-positive sample, and
highlight the need to identify and address
comorbidities that affect behavior.
Appropriate treatment strategies are needed
to alleviate the burden that these
comorbidites may place on effective HIV
treatment regimens.
