I recently completed 15 months of fieldwork with wild Delacour’s langurs in Northern Vietnam. Delacour's langurs are one of the six species of 'limestone langur' in the genus Trachypithecus which inhabit unusually harsh environments in southern China, northern Vietnam, and eastern Laos. The 'limestone langur' radiation moves and forages on rough, sparsely vegetated limestone karst formations. These remarkable primates are virtually unstudied, yet understanding their diet and foraging behavior will provide a critical window in they way in which herbivorous mammals must balance their nutritional requirements with the defensive compounds present in the plant foods they eat.
