(last updated on 2007/12/20)Author's Comments:
The Laboratory Manuals for Biology 25 reflect my goal of giving students in a one-semester course a wide exposure to hands-on biology. Some exercises test hypotheses with experiments, many of which the students design, while others are more purely observational. A number of the labs use live organisms as model systems, including bacteria and representatives from the plant, animal, and fungal kingdoms, while others employ both physical and computer models to simulate biological conditions. As is true for the lectures, the lab exercises cover the full range of biological organization, from molecules and cellular components to whole organisms and multi-species communities. The labs also use a range of learning styles including both deductive reasoning and a more inductive, exploratory approach. Regardless of their style or content, all of the lab exercises have in common the goal of encouraging students to become actively engaged in learning biology by seeing and doing it for themselves.
