    Abstract:
Essential nutrients for plant growth and survival are acquired from a heterogeneous soil environment. As the only part of the plant in direct contact with the soil, roots are solely responsible for nutrient uptake and assimilation. In this chapter we review the current state of knowledge about root system structural features that maximize the acquisition of nitrogen and phosphorus.
