Research Description: The metabolic pathways that exploit folate molecules in humans are critical to cell functioning. These pathways are linked to many major cell operations such as DNA methylation, and form an inter-related network within the cell. In other organisms such as plants, fungi, and e coli, this is also the case. But, the folate networks are not identical to the human manifestation. They have features that reflect the unique adaptations (extreme condition survival, photosynthesis, etc) seen in their respective species. My work is to consider how a general network structure (of the folate network) is modified in different ways to suit the needs of various representative organisms. The work will provide clues to ancestral mechanisms of folate biochemistry, and perhaps to the evolution of folate usage in biological systems.
