Research Interests:
Born in Brasil and raised in the Bronx, NY, Marcia grew up planting in the tradition of her forefathers - in old shoes and milk cartons. Her mother, scared to encourage “this foreseeable life of destitute” tried pushing her towards more lucrative endeavors. But the passion for plants won and at 15 Marcia landed her first weed-whacking job. Attending the school of Horticulture & Conservation led to bigger and better horticultural jobs and a formal education at Lehman College, the NY Botanical Garden and later at Cornell University. Marcia has been at Duke University since the spring of 2001.
