Abstract: Gold nanostars, with tunable plasmon in the near infrared tissue optic window, generate intense two-photon photoluminescence capable of in vitro cell labeling and in vivo particle tracking. Efficient photothermal ablation therapy is also demonstrated. © 2011 Optical Society of America.
