Biographical Info of Bahar Leventoglu
Bahar Leventoglu is Associate Professor of Economics and Political Science at Duke University. She specializes in the subjects of formal theory, international relations, political economy, and comparative politics. She has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses, including Political Applications of Game Theory, Politics in the Developing World, and Microeconomics. Before joining the Duke faculty, she taught at Stony Brook University from 2001-2006 and at the University of Rochester from 1996-2001. In 2001, Professor Leventoglu earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Rochester, where she also earned her M.A. in the same field. She studied political economy and electronics engineering at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, from 1994-1996.
Within her field, Professor Leventoglu’s research interests focus specifically on applied game theory, models of war, international bargaining, regime transitions, social mobility, and ethnic conflict. She recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to fund her project entitled, “Public Commitment in International Relations”, conducted in collaboration with Ahmer Tarar. Other titles of her published works include, “Public Commitment in Crisis Bargaining,” “Does Private Information Lead to Delay or War in Crisis Bargaining?,” “The Armed Peace: A Punctuated Equilibrium Theory of War,” and “Social Mobility and Political Transitions.” She is currently working with Ahmer Tarar to complete a book based on their recent research project.
Professor Leventoglu has shared her ideas and insights through both her publications and presentations. Her work has appeared in such prestigious academic journals as the International Studies Quarterly, the American Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Theoretical Politics. She has been invited to present her work at the Cowles Foundation Conference, the Social Science Research Institute Speaker Series, and the Political Economy Seminar, and to speak at universities, including the University of Southern California, Yale, Northwestern, Columbia, and New York University. She recently presented papers at the meetings of the American Political Science Association and the Midwest Political Science Association.
In addition to her research and teaching duties, Professor Leventoglu is also a member of the American Political Science Association and the Midwest Political Science Association. She has served on numerous university committees, including the Arts and Sciences Council and the Subcommittee on Travel to Middle East and Maghreb. In 2009, she was also part of the graduate affairs committee for her department.
