Gianni Toniolo, Research Professor and Research Professor of History

Gianni Toniolo is a research professor of economics at Duke University (since 1996) and also teaches at the Libera Univesrita' delle Scienze Sociali in Roma (Italy). He is a Reserach Fellow in the Center for Economic Policy Reserach (London). He was previously an economics professor at the University of Roma at Tor Vergta (1996-2007) and at the University of Venice (1986-1996), where he also held the chair position of the economics department from 1987-1991. He began his career as an assistant professor at The University of Venice 1968. He earned his degree in economics from the same university in 1966, before going on to Harvard University as a post-doctoral fellow in 1967.

Professor Toniolo specializes in the field of economic history. His teaching and research has focused on such subjects as European and Italian economic growth from 1800-2000, central banking and financial markets, international monetary cooperation, financial institutions, welfare and income distribution from 1800-2000, globalization, and post-war Europe.

Professor Toniolo’s research papers have been published in a number of prestigious academic journals. His work has appeared in The Economic History Review, the Journal of European Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, The European Economic Review, Open Economies Review and many others. His books are published by Oxford University Press, Cambridge University press and other prestigious publishers and have been transalted into various languages.

Professor Toniolo is the editor of Rivista di Storia Economica, a consultant to the Banca d'Italia and a columnist for Il Sole 24 Ore, Italy's financial. He is a member of the editorial boards for numerous journals around the world.

In acknowledgment of his success, Professor Toniolo has received several honors. He was made a member of the Academia Europa in Cambridge and was named a Senior Common Room Member at St. Anthony’s College in Oxford. He is a past president of the European Historical Economics Society.

Professor Toniolo specializes in the field of European economic history in the 19th and 20th Centuries. He is interested in exploring European economic growth, international monetary cooperation, financial history and distribution of welfare and income over the last two centuries. His latest projects include the titles, “A Benevolent Industrial Revolution?” and “The Gold Standard: Commit or Shadow?” Other titles of his more recent published papers are, “The Global Economy in the 1990s. A Long-run Perspective” with P. Rhode; “Central Banking Cooperation at the Bank for International Settlements;” “The European Economy Between the Wars” with C. Feinstein and P. Temin; and others.

He has also written several books on similar subjects, including Central Bank Cooperation at the Bank for International Settlements, Patterns of European Industrialization: the Nineteenth Century with R. E. Sylla, The Global Economy in the 1990s, A Long-run Perspective, and The European Economy Between the Wars with C. Feinstein and P. Temin.

Professor Toniolo is currently continuing his research on the study of industrialization during the “first globalization,” European economic development from 1800-present, post-unification Italy, and the general history of money, central banking, and financial markets and institutions.
