Biographical Info of James W. Roberts

James is an associate professor of economics at Duke University. His research focuses on industrial organization, auctions, and applied microeconomics. As a teacher, he specializes on the subjects of business strategy, microeconomics, and industrial organization. Before joining the Duke economics faculty, he also served as a teaching and research assistant at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, and Davidson College. James earned his Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University in 2009, presenting his dissertation on, “Empirical Essays on Auctions.” He also received his M.A. in economics from Northwestern after graduating magna cum laude from Davidson College.

For his accomplishments as a scholar and researcher, James has received various fellowships and awards. He was awarded the Northwestern 12-month fellowship from 2004-2009, in addition to the Center for the Study of Industrial Organization Research Fellowship in 2008 and 2009. While studying at Davidson College in 2004, he earned the A.K. Phifer Award in economics, and was selected as Best Paper and Participant for the 2004 Midwestern Economics Association Research Symposium. The previous year, he was also selected as Best Paper and Participant for the Duke University Undergraduate Economics Research Symposium.

Outside of his teaching and research responsibilities, James also served as referee for numerous peer reviewed journals. Before beginning his teaching career, he was an intern analyst at The Carlyle Group.
