Professor John Clum works in the fields of twentieth century American and British drama and American film with an emphasis on gay male theater and film. His most recent books are: Acting Gay: Male Homosexuality in Modern Drama (Columbia, 1992), which was revised and expanded as Still Acting Gay (Palgrave, 2000); Something For The Boys: Musical Theater And Gay Culture (St. Martins, 1999), and "He's All Man": Learning Masculinity, Gayness And Love From American Movies (Palgrave, 2000). He has written essays on Tennessee Williams, Sam Shepard, and Edward Albee for the Cambridge Companions to these authors' words. Other essays have appeared in Modern Drama, South Atlantic Quarterly and Theater Journal. He is currently working on two projects: a study of the intersection of the Broadway musical, opera, and modern dance; and a comparative study of gay cinema.

He also writes plays and teaches dramatic writing. His play "Randy's House" has been performed all over the United States.
