Catherine Ji Won Lee-Cates is a PhD candidate in English. Her research and teaching interests include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century transatlantic literature, affect theory, ethics, aesthetics, and the relationship between literature and science. She is currently working on her dissertation, titled Romantic Humility: Literature, Ethico-Politics, and Emotion, 1780-1820, which examines the emergence of a form of secular humility in literary writings from the Romantic period that does not focus on self-abasement but on selflessness, that materializes as a "mood" (Stimmung). She holds an MA in English from the University of British Columbia and a BA (high honors) in English from UC Berkeley.
