Research Interests: Religion, German Reformation, and interaction of religion and society.

Specializes in Reformation and the history of modern Christianity. He has written or edited some eleven books and some forty articles. Several of Dr. Hillerbrand's books have become standard texts. He served as editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation (1996) and is president of the American Society of Church History in 2000.
