Research Interests:

I received my B.A. from Creighton University, an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1977. Prior to coming to Duke in 1984, I was engaged in fulltime research at the Boys Town Center for the Study of Youth Development. My interests include social stratification, careers, organizations, and market transitions. I am currently conducting a multi-year panel study of state-owned and private manufacturing enterprises in Bulgaria during that country's transition to a market economy. I teach Markets and Marketing (SOC 158), Occupations, Professions, and Careers (SOC 165), and Markets and Management (SOC 190), the capstone course for the Markets and Management Program. In 1992, I was given the Howard Johnson Distinguished Teaching Award for my outstanding performance in the classroom.
