I am interested in the creative potential for randomness in music, as well as in the development of new ways of writing music which respond to the profound changes in the habits of modern listeners.

  • "Allerzielen" (provisional title), Toronto, Canada / Raleigh, NC, December, 2011
    I have accepted a commission to compose a work for the soprano Ashleigh Semkiw & an ensemble identical to that of Louis Andriessen's "Dances" (soprano, string quintet, harp, piano, percussion) for a recording project that will pair both works. The duration will be 30 minutes, ca.
  • NC Music Teachers Association, Salem, NC, October, 2011
    The NCMTA commissioned my work, "This City," for piano & generative electronics for a performance at their annual convention on 29 October 2011. Chicago-based pianist Mabel Kwan was the soloist.
  • "Usine", Lausanne, Switzerland, September, 2011
    The Swiss group Ensemble Babel commissioned my work USINE for a 24-hour performance at the Festival de Romont in September 2012. This work is scored for bass clarinet, melodica, saxophones, electric guitar, double bass, drum set & generative electronics. It is designed for extremely long (e.g. 24-hour) installation-type performance.
  • "Inland Ocean" for the Ciompi Quartet, Duke University, November, 2009
    I have accepted a commission from Duke University's resident string quartet, the Ciompi Quartet, to compose a new work for their Spring 2011 concert. I have provisionally entitled this work "Inland Ocean".
  • "Straits" for the Meehan/Perkins Duo, July 1, 2009
    I was commissioned by the Meehan/Perkins Duo, with the support of Meet The Composer's Commissioning Music/USA fund, to compose "Straits", a 16-minute work for 2 percussionists and electronics.
