Annie Koppes, Musicology

Annie Koppes

Anne Elise Koppes is a PhD student studying musicology with a certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at Duke University. Focusing on the economic and social exploitation of musicians of the twentieth century, Annie seeks to advocate for social justice and change through intersectional approaches to music history. In the past, her research has examined the exploitation of jazz and blues musicians such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, and Jelly Roll Morton among others. She is also interested in the social, economic, and political impacts of psychedelic rock and pop, specifically relating to queer studies.

Annie is currently the project manager of the Rosetta Reitz Musical Archive of Care hosted by Bass Connections. She has also been a graduate fellow in Duke University's Black Music and the Soul of America Lab and a graduate member in the Department of Music's Antiracist Working Group.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music with certificates in Violoncello Pedagogy and French Language, Literature, and Culture from Colorado State University.
