Jason Mulligan, Musicology

Jason Mulligan

Jason Mulligan is a composer seeking to explore how to blend the western classical tradition with the issues and sensibilities of 21st century life.  A native of Dallas, Jason studied music composition at the University of Miami and Peabody Conservatory with Scott Stinson and Kevin Puts respectively.  He has also had the privilege of taking lessons with John Mackey, Donald Grantham, Libby Larsen, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Del Tredici, Lansing McLoskey, Dmitri Tymoczko, and Michael Hersch.  Additionally he has participated in masterclasses with Christopher Rouse and Mark Adamo.  Jason's music has been performed around the country at festivals and institutions including, Source Song Festival, ICA Clarinetfest!, Southern Methodist University, Northern Illinois University, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Emporia State University, New American Voices, and the Opera America National Opera Center.

Jason's 2019-2020 season includes premieres at the International Double Reed Society Conference, the International Horn Symposium, and the International Clarinet Association Clarinetfest as well as at Emporia State University, Florida International University, and Southern Methodist University.

Jason's work focuses on two primary facets: collaboration/the formation of relationships with performers and the representation of social issues and their stigmas.  His recent work has dealt with topics including Alzheimer's Disease, social anxiety and isolation, and the stigma surrounding HIV.  Jason works with a number of different collaborators but his principle partner is soprano, Alissa Roca.  They perform together frequently both in original works and recitals of standard and modern repertoire.
