"The Sales Soundtrack: Producing Identities through Music, Sound Design and Image in American Television Advertising."


My dissertation involves ethnographic research in advertising agencies and sound design firms, specifically with regard for music and sound design in television commercials. Essentially, I hang out with people who make TV ads. I'm curious about how ad producers think about their "target audience," i.e., whoever they think might buy products or services, and then how they design music or sound they think resonates with or represents that audience identity.
