- Research Interests: Discursive analysis of music and music criticism (19th and 20th centuries)
Current interests include: a) New music in Singapore, the tension between state instrumentalization of aesthetics and national/cultural identification by listeners. b) War of the Romantics, the tension between pure musical object (Hanslick) and the unity of art and Folk (Neudeutsche Schule). c) Intercultural films by Zhang Yimou, Sung-su Kim, Brett Ratner, Rob Cohen; optic/haptic exoticization of Asians through sound and music.
