Biographical Info of Yana A. Lowry

Originally from Moscow, Russia, Yana Lowry is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Duke University pursuing a degree in Musicology. She is a recipient of the James B. Duke Fellowship. Her research concentrates on Soviet and German political music of the early twentieth century. In addition to music history, Yana is also interested in early performance practice and studies baroque flute with Rebecca Troxler. Yana earned an M.A. in Musicology from Duke University (2010), a B.M. in Flute Performance (Deborah Egekvist, teacher) and B.A. in History from UNC Greensboro (2008, summa cum laude). While at UNCG, Yana served as a principal flautist in the Wind Ensemble, won the Concerto Competition, and performed with the University Symphony Orchestra and Greensboro Opera Company. Prior to UNCG, Yana graduated with honors from Tulebaev Music School for Youth in Almaty, Kazakhstan. During that time, she won the first prize in The National Young Artist Woodwind and Brass competition, second prize in The Jubanov National competition as well as a prize for the best performance of music by a Kazakh composer. Yana also took lessons at the Moscow State Conservatory, where she studied with Mikhail Golishev, principal flautist of the Bolshoi Theater.
