Biography

Emily Threinen was appointed Director of the Duke University Wind Symphony in June, 2007.  Additionally, she works with wind chamber ensembles. During the 2006-07 academic year, Threinen completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the University of Michigan where she studied with Michael Haithcock.  The same year, she served as Director of Bands at Concordia University in Ann Arbor and Conductor and Artistic Director of America’s Premier 19th Century Brass Band, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band.  Currently, Threinen serves as Guest Conductor for the DSB.

In 2004, Threinen received a Master of Music degree in Conducting from Northwestern University where she studied with Mallory Thompson.  While at Northwestern, she was awarded Program Honors from the conducting faculty and was inducted to the National Music Honorary Society, Pi Kappa Lambda.  In 1999, Threinen received a Bachelor of Music dual degree in Clarinet Performance and Music Education from the University of Minnesota where her primary mentors included Craig Kirchhoff, Burt Hara, John Anderson, and Liz Jackson.

From 1999-2002, Threinen served as the Instrumental Music Director at Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota where she oversaw all elements of the band and instrumental music programs.  Threinen was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2001 and 2002.  In addition to her commitment as an educator, she was active as a professional clarinetist in the Twin City Metro Area; she held the position of Associate Clarinetist in The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and was recorded on the University of Minnesota CD Blue Dawn into White Heat and the score of the Sundance film, Superior Fall.

Threinen attends annual conducting workshops sponsored by the Conductors Guild and universities; the workshops attended in 2007 include the First Annual Frederick Fennell Memorial Conducting Masterclass and the Cabrillo New Music Festival.  Threinen is currently active in professional organizations, including the College Band Directors National Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the Conductors Guild, and the National Association for Music Education.
