Abstract: The number of axons that innervate autonomic ganglion cells is the result of competition in early life between terminals contacting the same target cell. In maturity, a correlation between the number of inputs a cell receives and dendritic complexity implies that geometry modulates neuronal competition. These observations suggest a novel view of the role that dendrites play in neuronal development. © 1983.
