Abstract:
Laser beam amplification in strongly driven potassium atoms is investigated. The pump and probe beams are tuned near the 4S 1/2 →4P 1/2 (D 1 ) transition and have linear, orthogonal polarizations. The probe beam amplification as a function of the probe-pump detuning curve is similar to that observed by Hemmer et al. The dependence of the amplification on the pump-beam intensity and tuning, and on the presence of helium or nitrogen buffer gas, is discussed.
