    An expression is derived for the minimum detectable contrast level for an object in presence of speckle noise. The threshold limits of the discernible contrast with variation of the statistical parameters of the illumination are studied. Minimum detectable contrast is measured for two classes of speckle noise i) the coherent superposition of a plane wave and a diffuse (fully developed speckle) beam, the threshold being established as a function of beam ratio, and ii) the intensity superposition of N-independent fully developed speckle patterns. The effects of smoothing by area and by multiple looks are considered. Experimental results are in good agreement with theory
