    Abstract:
    The feasibility of optical limiting with submicrowatt laser power at milliseconds speed is demonstrated. Because many dyes exist that will cover the entire visible spectrum, such dye-doped nematic films are highly promising candidates for application as very broadband optical limiters. These films can be easily integrated onto other optical limiting devices to fabricate devices that will provide protection against frequency agile picosecond cw lasers.
