Research Description: I have been working to understand granular friction, in particular the stick-slip nature of sliding friction and its application to earthquake models. In the experimental apparatus a 'slider' is pulled along a bed of photoelastic discs, the two surfaces shear against each other with an abrupt release of energy once a threshold is reached in the shearing stress. Building on previous work, I hope to gain a better understanding of the build up and release of forces during such slip event.
