Highlight:
Ryan Kozlowski earned his B.S. in Physics from Davidson College and officially joined LTB (the research group of Bob Behringer) the summer of 2017. His current work focuses primarily on stick-slip dynamics and micromechanics in granular systems with an elastically driven, grain-scale intruder. He utilizes an annular geometry setup to study steady-state regimes and high-resolution imaging to capture photoelastic force chains during long time-scale stick events to gain insight into mechanical rearrangements of force networks as the intruder is forced through the bed. He has recently been experimenting with different grain shapes and their effects on the stick-slip dynamics observed with both the single-grain intruder and a fixed-pressure slider on top of a bed of grains.

As a Bass Instructional Fellow for the 2019-2020 academic years, Ryan will be the Instructor of Record for Physics 264L, Optics and Modern Physics, a course which introduces students to the wild physics of the 20th Century, including relativity, quantum mechanics, and applications thereof. His long-term goal is to be a professor with a primary focus on teaching, especially at a liberal arts college or primarily undergraduate institution. He feels that granular materials research is quite accessible (and financially reasonable) to undergraduates at such institutions; his passion is teaching students about the wonders of the universe, as well as learning about students and mentoring them as they discover their professional desires and goals.
