Research Interests: Anthropology, History and Literature of the French Caribbean and the Atlantic World
Having just completed my book Soccer Empire: The World Cup and the Future of France (forthcoming with University of California Press in 2010), and a reader co-authored with Julius Scott entitled Origins of the Black Atlantic, I am now focusing my research on my book on the history of the banjo (under contract with Harvard University Press), for which I received a National Humanities Center Fellowship and a Guggenhiem Fellowship this year.
