Research Interests:

My research focuses on three themes: (1) the sources of poverty and inequality; (2) the consequences of globalization; and, (3) the political outcomes of stratification. Within each theme, I utilize empirical and theoretical approaches, macro- and individual-levels of analysis, and study the U.S. and comparative-historical cases. Among the research questions I am presently working on are: What is the relationship between the welfare state and poverty? What are the causes of wildcat strikes in U.S. manufacturing? How do political parties affect the amount of poverty and inequality in advanced capitalist democracies? How does globalization impact democratic welfare states? What are the effects of structural change on poverty? Beyond these topics, I am always interested in hearing about new ideas from students across a host of different sociological subjects. Finally, I also teach courses in "Poverty and Society," "Organizations and Management," "Methods of Social Research" and "Comparing States and Markets."
