   Author's Comments:
   The original work of Sorokin was published in 1944, near the conclusion of WWII. This is a reissue of the original text, with my new introduction.

   Abstract:
   The introduction to the comparative study of Sorokin provides a framework going back to Tocqueville's assessment of the United States and Russia as lead countries of modernity. Sorokin's comparison has ongoing relevance in this post-Communist, post cold-war era, where US-Russian relations remain ambiguous.
