    Abstract:
This paper discusses the concept of negative national identity which a country acquires based on gross historical misdeeds, real or imputed. Goffman's concept of stigma has generated an important literature in social psychology but not previously at the national level. What are the strategies followed by countries to which a stigma is attached? Some adopt a policy of denial; others of partial redemption. Germany which has had a strong negative national identity has sought atonment.

    Keywords:
    Goffman; stigma; negative national identity
