    Author's Comments:
This paper was presented at the 13th Colloquium (now called Congress) of the Association Internationale des Sociologues de Langue Francaise, held in Geneva, Switzerland, August 29-September 2, 1988.

    Abstract:
20 years after 1968 is an opportune time for a sociological reflection on the events and the interpretations of what "1968" means. First is that "1968" as a sociocultural and sociopolitical setting spans more than one year, more of a five-year stretch. Second, it was a global event involving a conflict of generations, with a central focus being the challenge of authority (of all sorts). Third, as the title of this paper suggests, the question of "1968" entails why it was not predicted in standard sociological models. Equally, why in the radical sociological analyses of the 1960s was the political conservatism of the 1970s and 1980s equally not predicted?

    Keywords:
longue duree; generation; l'erotique; l'exotique; crise epistemologique
