    Author's Comments:
Contexts is a publication of the American Sociological Association. The paper is part of the symposium "America in a new age of global conflict", organized by the author at the 2004 ASA annual meeting.

    Abstract:
Sociology needs to pay attention to global conflicts, such as inter-civilizational conflicts and world wars. In the present decade, the United States has entered into a world war against a stateless but real enemy. Domestic and international consequences of this are profound in providing a certain applicability to Orwell's "1984". Hence the title of this article.

    Keywords:
Huntington; Orwell; global conflict; welfare state; warfare state
