Papers/Articles/Chapters in Books
- D.H. Foster. "Film Adaptation: From I, Robot to I Pagliacci." Association of Literary Scholars and Critics Newsletter (11-1 (Winter 2005): 8).
Abstract: This paper reports on the Adaptation
Seminar
that took place during the 2004 Association
for Literary Scholars and Critics
Conference
in New Orleans. It represents as closely
as
possible the various theories put forth by
the scholars and artists who participated
in
this seminar, which focused on the subject
of film and television adaptation.
Covering
a wide variety of subjects, this report
includes the proposal of new adaptational
models that range from the scientific
subject of ontogenesis to the science
fictional subject of Isaac Assimov's Robot
Laws, as well as individual interpretations
of how books like Joyce's Ulysses
and
Homer's Odyssey are adapted into
such
films as O, Brother Where Art Thou?
.
As a meeting not only of scholars but also
artists, this seminar addressed the
practical question of how to adapt for film
and television, what constitutes a "good"
adaptation, and if and what rules existed
to
guide the adaptation process that turns
works from other media into film and
television.
