Current projects:
I am at work on an essay on the production, reception, and prohibition of roadside memorials. These memorials catalyze questions regarding the role of the state in the management of public sentiment, and prompt speculation about the viability and limits of the operations of public memory. A longer project explores the rhetorical role of late nineteenth-century photojournalism in prompting public sympathy and sponsoring a politics of pity.
I examine sites of rhetorical production in the public sphere, especially in urban settings where material resources of the built environment are assembled to effect strong public feeling through civic aesthetics. I am also interested in the academic library as a rhetorical site of knowledge-production and dissemination.
