- Purnima Shah. "Some issues on the Gender Politics in the Bhakti Genre of Dance-theatre Performance." The Drama Review (2007).
Abstract: This paper elucidates and analyzes three
major issues on gender politics in the
bhakti genre of Indian dance-theatre
performance: first, the irony concerning
the conceptual celebration and divinization
of the “female principle” and the
simultaneous negation of female actor-
dancers in the bhakti genre of regional
dance-theatre performance; secondly, the
predicaments faced in the continuity of
these all-male artistic traditions during
the Victorian era in India; and finally,
the compromises and changes necessitated in
these art forms, consequential to the
empowerment of upper-class women into the
field of classical performance after
independence from the British rule in the
1950s.
