Research Interests: 19th Century Atlantic World

As a historian of the nineteenth-century Atlantic World, I am especially interested in the study of gender and sexuality, race, labor, colonial governance, and the relationship between representation and the production of knowledge. My dissertation is tentatively titled “Adulterous Wives and Murderous Husbands: Governance, Gendered Violence, and the Formation of the East Indian Subject in the British Caribbean, 1860 – 1917.” It will explore how semi-free East Indian subjects acquired racial and gender identities, and how this process both informed and emerged from strategies of governance in the Anglophone Caribbean.

Areas of Interest:

Imperial Britain
Colonial Latin America
