I’m interested in the visualization of race and the politics of identity formation in colonial Latin America, specifically in relation to mestizaje and the African diaspora. I investigate how Afro-Latinos interactively forged their own identities despite the cultural circumstance of slavery and the racial ideologies embedded in castas paintings from Brazil, Mexico, and Peru.
