Research Interests
I specialize in modern Latin American, with an emphasis on Brazil. My dissertation investigates the role of the São Paulo "political class" in the demise of Brazil's military regime. While most studies of Brazil's redemocratization privilege the actions of civil society in toppling the regime, I examine how elite political culture and changing elite attitudes toward democracy and popular political participation destabilized the regime over the course of a decade, culminating in the opposition's rise to power in 1985.
