Research Interests
My dissertation is a study of public opinion (newspaper and parliamentary opinion) and German foreign policy before the First World War. Much of my research is centered around the press section of the German foreign office and its leader, Otto Hammann. I am especially interested in the period from 1897 to 1914 and the broader cultural and social context of European international politics in these years. Nevertheless, I have various other topical interests, which include military history (especially civil-military relations as it relates to my research), intellectual history, and the history of science. My larger field of study is modern Europe, which I conceive very broadly in terms of periodization (1815- 1945) and national context (my focus is central Europe, but I have dealt comparatively with Britain, France and Russia in my coursework).
