Latin America, Environmental History, Labor History, Brazil Currently finishing a dissertation on the labor and environmental history of the sugar-growing region of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil. In this region, which has been devoted to a sugar-cane monoculture for nearly five hundred years, the ties between labor, land, and race are tight. They are examined primarily in the 20th century, though the dissertation adopts a flexible temporal scope.
