    Abstract:

Canada's formal constitutional ties to Britain were slim and for all practical purposes Canada governed itself domestically. Though Britain theoretically controlled Canada's external affairs, Canada made its own decisions about the extent to which it would participate in British international initiatives. The most obvious connection with Britain was with the Crown, and this was with the mourning of Canadian of the death of Queen Victoria.
