I work on the history of women's health. I am currently finishing a book on miscarriage experiences in nineteenth-century America. The project analyzes medical responses to the event and how doctors valued miscarried tissues for scientific clues to human development. It also explores women's descriptions of miscarriage, calling into question modern ideas of personhood and death. I am also starting a second project that will look at early embryology in the U.S. and the development of prenatal health.
