I am a PhD candidate in history at Duke University. My research examines racial difference among Mexicans from two neighboring states, and how their ideas of race -- about themselves and others -- changed since settling in North Carolina in the 1980s. Through oral histories and archival research conducted in both the United States and Mexico, I also show how migrants transmitted racial knowledge to Mexico, thereby also shifting understandings of race in their home communities.
